Applying Visual Novel Concepts in Interactive Learning Videos

In an effort to improve the effectiveness of corporate regulatory and compliance training, interactive learning video can now be a powerful strategy. Not long ago, Monkey Melody had the opportunity to collaborate with Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on developing learning multimedia for its Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct material.

While shaping the concept, we looked for a format that would let learners not only enjoy the visuals on screen, but actually get pulled into a story.

In the end, we settled on the Visual Novel format as the foundation for both the visual style and the delivery. As the name suggests, a Visual Novel is a type of game built heavily around narrative. What makes it distinctive is that a Visual Novel includes interactive elements that can shape how the story ends. Visual novels vary in style, but in general, players see a character on screen alongside a text box containing dialogue or narration.

Despite its simplicity, this genre has built a loyal following over the years. Since the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct material is fundamental for every KPK employee, a story-driven approach can create a sense of familiarity and boost learners' interest in the material.

Adding Interactivity Through Branching Storylines

Beyond the visual style, a hallmark of the visual novel is the presence of moments throughout the story where players are faced with choices that can shape how the plot unfolds. We built this aspect into one of the modules in the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct material.

In writing the story, we drew directly on real cases supplied by the KPK. We wove these cases into the characters and narrative we had already established, so that learners would feel genuinely invested in the main character. Although the branching storyline appears in only one module, our hope is that it helps learners more easily picture the kinds of dilemmas that can arise, along with their consequences.

Throughout the module, learners need to choose from the available options to move the story forward. As in any visual novel, each choice steers learners toward a particular route and, eventually, toward a particular ending. The ending they land on can vary depending on the choices made along the way.

This branching-story concept is reinforced with matching visuals and voice acting to deliver a memorable experience. The hope is that this combination of elements helps learners more easily remember and apply the lessons embedded in the story.
