Conventional Video VS Interactive Video

Video-based learning material is now extremely common, showing up even on platforms that aren't primarily built for education, like TikTok and YouTube. Over time, the bar for learning videos has kept rising. Motion graphics, for instance, have become a near-mandatory element for holding a viewer's attention.

But no matter how polished the visuals look, the video format still pushes learners toward a passive learning process. If viewers aren't applying critical thinking while they watch, the results may not improve much compared with learning in a classroom.

Conventional video does have its strengths. The format is simple, production costs are relatively low, and โ€” as we all experienced during the pandemic โ€” it can be accessed anytime. For companies that need to convert every module into video, this format still has its place. Its main weakness, though, is low engagement.

Interactive video, by contrast, is designed to keep learners actively involved. While watching, they're not just absorbing information โ€” they're prompted to click, choose, answer, or even decide the flow of the material themselves. A simple example: a short quiz appearing mid-video can push learners to recall a topic covered earlier.

Beyond that, there are other interactive formats worth trying, such as interactive diagrams and branching scenarios. The upside is that they can boost engagement and help concentration last longer, which in turn should improve comprehension. Naturally, producing interactive video takes extra planning and effort.

Interactive Video in Practice

A study published in the Journal of Computer Science Advancements found that, among 300 students, the group that learned through interactive video showed higher retention than those who learned through conventional video. The gap in completion rate between the two groups was 14%, while the gap in average watch time was 13 minutes.

That's not all โ€” engagement with the content jumped dramatically, from an average of 3 interactions per video to 27. The impact showed up in the results too: the interactive group's learning scores came in 25 percent higher than the conventional group's.

Interestingly, participants in the study also reported a more immersive experience. They felt as though they were "conversing" with the material. Quizzes inside the video delivered instant feedback, while branching scenarios stirred curiosity. These findings line up with multimedia cognitive theory, which holds that people learn better when they actively process information through a combination of text, visuals, and interaction.

These findings are also echoed in Monkey Melody's own experience producing interactive learning videos. Monkey Melody has helped a number of companies build interactive learning videos for simulation-based training needs. One example is an English-communication training program for nurses who need to learn how to communicate with colleagues and patients in English.

In this project, the interactive video was designed to resemble a simulated dialogue, complete with segments that prompt learners to recall vocabulary they'd already studied. The goal was to give learners a feel for what real conversations look like across different situations.

We used tools like H5P and paired them with a simple yet responsive UI design, so the learning experience stayed comfortable to access from anywhere.

Monkey Melody has also worked with KPK on multimedia learning content covering the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. While shaping the concept, we looked for a format that would let learners not just enjoy the visuals while learning, but actually get absorbed into a story. We ultimately settled on a branching, visual-novel-style narrative. Learners are presented with important choices at key moments, and their decisions shape both the plot and the ending, making the learning experience feel genuinely immersive.

Having completed more than 1,000 multimedia learning projects, Monkey Melody understands that every company has different challenges and goals. That's why we offer a tailored approach to make sure every video we produce achieves its intended training objective. By combining the latest technology with a creative approach, we're ready to help your company tackle the training challenges of the future.
