New Skills for a New Era
Microsoft found that 82% of global leaders believe their employees need new skills to be ready for the AI era. In other words, change is underway, and the responsibility to prepare an adequate workforce is growing right along with it.
2024 was the year AI started becoming part of everyday work. According to McKinsey, the number of organizations using AI on a regular basis doubled in just the last 10 months. The report also noted that Large Language Models (LLMs) are no longer limited to handling text; they can now generate video, audio, and even visuals for business needs. In other words, GenAI's potential in the workplace keeps expanding.
An estimated 68% of job skills are expected to change by 2030 because of accelerating GenAI technology. And that shift is already underway.
Coursera's 2024 report shows a significant surge in interest in learning AI. For instance, enrollment in Generative AI-related courses jumped 1,060% globally in just the past year. That number reflects a real urgency around the need to catch up. The question is whether organizations are giving their people the space and clear direction to do exactly that.
Learning AI from Entry Level to Leadership Level
Several global companies have already started building AI-based learning paths. Udemy Business, for example, developed a dedicated training track so employees at every level can be ready for GenAI integration, including:
- Introduction to GenAI for All Employees โ an introduction to AI for all employees, free of technical jargon.
- Next-Level GenAI Tech โ learning advanced techniques such as prompt engineering.
- GenAI Skills to Drive Productivity โ focused on how AI can boost team productivity.
- GenAI Skills for Leaders โ equipping leaders to guide their teams through the transformation.
Equipping employees with AI skills doesn't have to start with complicated technical training. What matters most is giving people a basic understanding of why AI is relevant to their work. From there, they need access to relevant learning content. And finally, they need to be able to fold that learning into the way the organization actually works.
Non-technical teams such as procurement, HR, and finance can also start learning simple prompting to speed up their own work. GenAI can be put to use across a wide range of fields, essentially anyone who works with data, information, or communication. In short, GenAI really can be applied to almost every function in an organization.
