Natural Voice, Maximum Learning

The Voice Principle

In digital learning, especially in the corporate space, how material is delivered is one of the factors that determines a learning video's effectiveness. It isn't just about having informative content โ€” it's also about how that content comes across.

One principle that's become increasingly relevant is the Voice Principle, put forward by Richard E. Mayer. This principle holds that narration is more effective when delivered using a natural-sounding human voice.

So what does this have to do with how talent or presenters perform in a learning video?

Across the many learning video projects Monkey Melody has handled, we've noticed one consistent pattern: videos whose narration is delivered in a natural and conversational way are easier to understand and more engaging to watch. Put simply, which is more compelling โ€” a formal speech or a podcast? Most people would choose the podcast, precisely because of its conversational format.

The Presenter's Challenge: Teaching vs. Speaking on Camera

Many of our presenters are experts in their fields. Some are used to standing in front of a classroom or a meeting room. But the moment they're faced with a camera, a microphone, and studio lighting, their demeanor can change completely.

Some suddenly turn nervous. Others stumble over their words even though they know the material by heart. The unfamiliar set, the limited video duration, and the pressure to "not get it wrong" can all affect how naturally they come across.

This is where the production team's role becomes essential โ€” not just to record, but to help create an environment that lets presenters perform as naturally as possible.

There are several things we do to help. Well before shoot day, for example, we make sure presenters have received the script, or have written their own if they'd rather prepare it themselves. We then encourage them to record a practice take on their own, both as a rehearsal and as a way to get used to speaking to a camera without an audience.

When shoot day arrives, we never push presenters straight into filming. We walk them through the set, explain what each piece of equipment does, and give them room to acclimate. We make sure every direction is delivered in language that's polite, clear, and friendly.

Once filming begins, our director makes sure the presenter stays relaxed and can deliver the material the way they would in front of a classroom. All of this is done to produce a delivery that is as optimal and natural as possible.

In an era of digital learning that's growing ever more visual and information-dense, voice is a messenger that cannot be overlooked. A presenter who sounds natural isn't just a matter of comfort โ€” it's a matter of effectiveness. Because in the end, successful learning isn't simply about delivering information; it's about making sure that information actually gets through, is understood, and is remembered.

Having completed more than 1,000 learning multimedia projects, Monkey Melody understands that every company faces different challenges and goals. That's why we offer a tailored approach to ensure every video we produce achieves its intended training objectives.
